Popular Tex-Mex Restaurant Enchiladas Y Mas Reopens This Summer - Eater Austin

While the popular and beloved Tex-Mex spot Enchiladas y Mas closed in April after 26 years of service, the restaurant is coming back under new owners who are still part of the founding family. The updated Enchiladas y Mas is reopening today, Tuesday, August 18, in the Crestview neighborhood on 1911 West Anderson Lane, starting at 11 a.m.

Enchiladas’s original co-owners Robert and Mary Martinez sold the restaurant to Eva and Carmen Hernandez, who were previously the restaurant’s general managers and the daughters of the late co-owner Roe Hernandez. Hernandez, who was Mary Martinez’s brother, passed away last year.

The revamped restaurant will offer both dine-in and takeout services. In order to adhere to COVID-19 safety regulations, the dining room will only feature 12 tables, and it is limiting seatings to 90 minutes or less. Face masks are required for everyone who isn’t seated at a table. (The restaurant is also selling its own branded face masks too.)

The Tex-Mex menu remains the same, full of enchiladas, fajitas, tacos, nachos, all-day breakfast, and drinks. As an opening day special, Enchiladas y Mas is offering $10 16-ounce to-go margaritas with the purchase of an entree. Its regular hours aren’t available yet.

The Martinezes decided to close the restaurant ahead of the end of its lease in June because they wanted to retire. “This was our decision,” they wrote in the Facebook announcement.

In July Eva and Carmen Hernandez told Eater that they were in the middle of working on securing permits, with a tentative plan to open the restaurant at the end of that month.

Robert Martinez and Roe Hernandez opened the restaurant in 1994 somewhere else in Central Austin, and relocated the business to West Anderson Lane in the late 1990s.

This is similar to what happened with another Austin Tex-Mex restaurant. After 65 years, the Joseph family decided to close El Patio in August 2019 so that they could retire. Then, a new group of owners — including Kristyn Ciani, the granddaughter of original founders Paul and Mary Joseph — took over the space and reopened the restaurant later that September.

Update, August 18: This article, originally published on June 17, has been updated to reflect Enchiladas’s opening date.
