The Fours, popular pre- and post-game hangout, Friendly Toast close permanently - Boston Herald

Monday marked last call at one of Canal Street’s favorite watering holes as The Fours announced it had poured its final drink after 44 years in business.

“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the permanent closure of The Fours Boston as of Monday, August 31st,” the pub announced on Facebook. “We extend our sincerest thanks to all of you, our loyal customers, who have supported us for so many years. You have made The Fours such a treasured place and we are forever grateful for the wonderful memories we have made together.”

Situated just steps from TD Garden, The Fours has been a staple pre- and post-game tradition for Celtics and Bruins fans alike for decades. Restaurant management thanked staff, fans, customers and players for turning The Fours into “the number one sports bar in America” over the years.

“To the Boston community, it has been our honor to call the City of Champions our home. We have the best fans. Period. Thank you for making The Fours part of your traditions over the years,” management wrote on Facebook.

Another popular restaurant, The Friendly Toast in Cambridge’s Kendall Square, also announced on Monday it would not reopen following coronavirus pandemic shutdowns.

“We are saddened to announce that we will not be reopening our Kendall Square – Cambridge, MA location,” the restaurant posted on Facebook. “We have a long and happy history there full of great memories and this is a tough moment for us. Over the last couple months, we’ve been slowly and safely reopening our restaurants with every precaution in mind to keep our team and guests safe. We cannot thank you all enough for our overwhelmingly positive support we’ve received in these very challenging restaurant and life times.”

The restaurant’s other locations will remain open, according to management. The post also hinted that The Friendly Toast might mount a Cambridge comeback, telling diners to be on the lookout for its return to the neighborhood “soon.”

Boston’s restaurant industry has been hard hit by the coronavirus pandemic that for month closed indoor dining at establishments and has cut dining room and patio capacity to a fraction of their typical volumes.

Massachusetts Restaurant Association President Bob Luz has said the pandemic shutdowns could squeeze out up to a quarter of the state’s restaurants when all is said and done.

For restaurants like The Fours that heavily relied on fans going to and from games at TD Garden, the hit has been especially devastating with professional sports also closed to outside audiences.

The Fours restaurants Norwell and Quincy locations remain open.
