Eatbeat: Family restaurant a popular gathering place - Grand Forks Herald

There’s a Big Dog Breakfast for $9.89 on the menu at Grama Butterwick’s restaurant on South Washington Street. It bring two eggs, two sausage links, two slices of bacon, hash browns and all-you-can-eat pancakes or French toast.

Needless to say, most people settle for lighter breakfast fare at this long-time restaurant on South Washington Street. It’s a place where people meet for coffee. Some come for a hearty breakfast. Or they look for luncheon specials.

The specials include roast beef and meatloaf dinners along with chicken strips. Also listed is liver and onions – sometimes hard to find.

With its wide-ranging menu, Grama Butterwicks has 14 booths with windows looking out over South Washington Street. Beyond the booths, there is a large, more formal dining area with booths and a pleasing décor with plants and greenery. There also is a special table reserved for a gathering of coffee drinkers.

Parking is easy. There usually are spots in front. There is a large parking lot at the rear of the restaurant. And there is street parking.

Grama Butterwicks is one of the popular spots for breakfast gatherings on Sundays. It also has a steady clientele of coffee klatches, where affairs of the world are settled in conversations.

Linda Durkin was my server one morning this week. She has been on the job at Grama Butterwick’s for two and a half years. Before this job, she worked for 35 years at Mexican Village.

She likes working with people. And she says, if you don’t, you shouldn’t be a server.

“I’m a people person,” she said. “I like my customers.”

She is calm, quiet, efficient and, at the same time, friendly. She regularly serves a gathering of men who let her know, sometimes by their telephones, that they want more coffee.

With its large parking area and variety of seating, Grama Butterwick’s is a likely choice to meet and eat. It started in Grand Forks as Sambo’s.
