GRAND HAVEN, MI - Dangerous swimming conditions are forecast to develop today and tonight at Lake Michigan beaches from Grand Haven south to St. Joe.
Winds increasing to up to 25 mph during the day Tuesday could lead to 5-foot waves and strong currents, the National Weather Service is warning. In this kind of situation, waves are likely to crash over piers and could sweep pier walkers into the water.
“Most drownings in the Great Lakes occur with waves 3-5 feet,” NWS officials said.
The swim risk along the shoreline is expected to moderate a bit as you go north, toward Big Sable and Little Sable points.
Farther south, along the bottom curve of Lake Michigan in Indiana and Illinois, beach hazard warnings are stretching into their second day, according to the Associated Press.
Officials are urging people to stay out of the water there after a string of recent rescues and the death of a 16-year-old boy. The teen went missing Sunday in the waters off Portage, Indiana. His body was found on Monday, the AP reported.
In other rescues, two men in their 30s had to be pulled from the waters off Holland State Park Sunday night. They were caught in a rip current and swept out into deeper water. Jet skiers were able to bring them back to shore.
There have been at least 58 deaths in the Great Lakes so far this year, with at least 32 happening in Lake Michigan, according to the Great Lakes Surf Project, with keeps a tally of all drownings and advocates for life guards on public beaches.
