Apple accounted for nearly 50% of total smartphone shipments in the US during the second quarter (April-June) this year. According to a Canalys report, the Cupertino-based company held 47.1% market share of the US smartphone shipments during the quarter. The biggest numbers came from iPhone 11 and iPhone SE for Apple in the quarter.
As per the report, Apple shipped 15% more iPhone 11 units as compared to its predecessor, the iPhone XR. The launch of affordable iPhone SE which comes at a starting price of $399 acted as another catalyst. “With the launch of the iPhone SE, Apple’s quarterly market share ballooned to 47%,” the report said.
While Samsung matched its 2019 shipments levels during the same quarter, it shipped 59% fewer units of Samsung Galaxy S20 5G series handsets than S10 series models in Q2 2019. However, Samsung found itself leaning heavily on its low-end Galaxy A10e and A20 devices to prop up shipments, the report added.
Total units shipped in the US in Q2, 2020 were 31.9 million which is a 5% decline when compared to the Q2 last year. Nearly 70% of the smartphones shipped were made in China, says the Canalys report. Together, Apple and Samsung for seven out of every 10 devices sold in the US. As per the Canalys report, the average price of a smartphone in the US in the Q2, 2020 was $503.
