Around East County: Neighborhood food trucks prove popular - East Bay Times

Since the pandemic began five months ago local small restaurants have been looking for ways to keep their doors open, but they’re not the only local food service businesses trying to stay afloat during these hard times. Local food truck vendors are also looking at ways to keep going and finding that taking their offerings into local neighborhoods is saving their bacon.

“Usually spring, summer and early fall are our busiest times,” said Rosa Tilly, who owns Rosa’s Mexi-Cal in Pittsburg. “Without events, we’re out of business.”

For the past several years food trucks have become popular at local fairs, festivals and food truck nights in East County. While many of these pop-up style businesses were at one time hard to find, these days these local food truck operators host social media pages and websites that have large followings. Many of the food trucks seen at local events today are run by local residents like Tilly.

“We always have a busy schedule with events from Sacramento to Oakland,” she said.

In the beginning of the pandemic choices for takeout food were limited, as many restaurants didn’t have that option before the pandemic and had to work out ways to change their business practices. Over the past five months, food delivery services have offered more choices, but they can be very expensive. Looking for more choices, some East County neighborhoods have taken advantage of inviting food truck businesses to spots inside their neighborhoods where they can offer their services. One Oakley neighborhood has the advantage of having someone who was familiar with putting on fundraisers and had a way to contact local food truck companies.

“One day our local Straw Hat Pizza (food) truck came out on a Saturday afternoon. I’ve known the owners for years, and it was a treat having them, and my neighborhood loved it,” said Pamela Miller, who lives in the Summer Lake neighborhood in Oakley. “So I started thinking, ‘What if I reached out to others to see if they’d like to come out as well?’ ”

Miller said that for some of the food truck owners coming into a neighborhood was a new idea for them, but they were very receptive.

“It started becoming popular, and it was a treat for many,” she said. “Other neighborhoods started setting up food trucks as well, and I have people reaching out to me asking how to get in touch with some of the food truck owners and how to schedule.”

Tilly said that, as with normal business practices, each city has special fees that need to be paid and rules for doing business. Although she isn’t making the money she did in previous years, Tilly said she’s grateful she’s been able to make some income.

“We’re lucky to be already booked up almost every day until the end of September,” she said.
