With an extreme heat advisory in place for San Diego deserts this weekend, Cleveland National Forest has closed two of the most popular and difficult trails in North County.
Three Sisters Trail and Cedar Creek Falls Trail, which run through the Ramona and Julian areas, were closed on Saturday, both because of the hazardous fire conditions along the trails and for public safety reasons. The trails can be arduous and county search and rescue crews are often overwhelmed with calls on hot weekends from hikers suffering heat prostration and heat stroke because they didn’t bring enough water or didn’t plan properly for the trip. Temperatures were expected to top 100 in many inland communities. The closure should be lifted on Sunday.
Also on Saturday, the forest announced “elevated” fire restrictions for visitors that will continue until Jan. 1.
These restrictions include no smoking, except within a closed vehicle or building or developed recreation site; no use of welding or acetylene torches with an open flame; no target shooting or use of a firearm, air rifle or gas gun; and no building, maintaining, attending or using a fire, campfire or charcoal fire, except within a developed recreation site. These new restrictions are in addition to the forest’s year-round ban of fireworks.
