The owners of a Palo Alto favorite, the Mayfield Bakery & Cafe, have decided to shut down the restaurant for good, citing the high costs of doing business during the pandemic.

“I am sad to announce the permanent closure of the Mayfield Bakery & Cafe. Like many restaurants throughout the area and across the country, the impact of the COVID-19 virus and the subsequent shelter-in-place orders have reduced revenues to an unsustainable level,” restaurateur Tim Stannard, of the Bacchus Management Group owners, said in a statement. “I would like to share a heartfelt thank you to all of our team members, as well as our loyal guests, for 11 wonderful years.”

Mayfield combined a chef-driven, farm-to-table restaurant that supported local farmers with a scratch bakery. In recent months the cafe had been offering a fixed menu for takeout and delivery.

“Heartbroken to see this beautiful lunch & coffee spot close,” customer Areeba K. posted this week on Yelp, “and grateful for all the months spent in their outdoor seating area working while having the best iced lattes and carrot bread I’ve ever had. You will be missed. Thanks for serving the Palo Alto community for so long so selflessly.”

The closing leaves Town & Country Village with a major vacancy. The restaurant has occupied a prime corner space, with patio seating, at the center on El Camino Real across from Stanford University.

Bacchus also owns two Michelin-starred restaurants — the Village Pub in Woodside and Spruce in San Francisco — along with the upscale Selby’s in Atherton, the Saratoga in San Francisco and the Pizza Antica restaurants at San Jose’s Santana Row, in Lafayette and in Mill Valley. All but the Saratoga are currently offering takeout and delivery; that bar/restaurant is listed as temporarily closed.
