Popular Japanese food truck and SF restaurant will close at end of the month - SFGate

Izakaya Roku is closing — and they’re looking for a new owner to take over their popular bento food truck, JapaCurry.

Opened by Jay Hamada as a brick-and-mortar restaurant in 2013 following the success of his food truck, the Japanese pub known for its spicy ramen, seared fish and shareable small plates announced Saturday that it will shutter on July 31.

“Thank you for your supporting business during Covid-19 and the past 10 years,” the Market Street eatery wrote in a statement on Instagram. “We had an amazing time serving food and drinks to San Francisco and the Bay Area. We saw so many smiles, celebrations, and people enjoying our food. We’ll miss you all.”

Recognized as the first Japanese food truck in the Bay Area, JapaCurry has long been a sought-after lunchtime spot, often parked in SoMa and the Financial District. Just a week before the announcement of the closure was made, a listing on Craigslist revealed the familiar orange food truck, as well as a permit to operate in the city of San Francisco, were for sale for $40,000 each, comprising a total asking price of $80,000 for interested buyers. The truck comes equipped with a deep fryer and four-burner stove as well as a fridge and a freezer.

When a customer responded to the Instagram post asking whether the proprietors would someday open a new business, the restaurant said it would have to file for bankruptcy if they did.

Still, it’s not too late to enjoy one last meal from Izakaya Roku. The restaurant is accepting takeout and third-party delivery orders in addition to selling discounted bottles of sake ($65 large, $24 small) and Japanese craft beer ($5 each). T-shirts memorializing the restaurant are $20.

Izakaya Roku is located at 1819 Market St. in San Francisco. Hours: 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday-Wednesday. For takeout orders, call 415-861-6500.
