Small power grids never more popular, study says - Houston Chronicle

The United States installed a record number of small power grids last year that can distribute power independent of traditional utility-sized power grids, according to a new study.

The research firm Wood Mackenzie reported that 546 microgrids were installed in 2019 with three organizations installing two-thirds of the projects, including Houston-based Enchanted Rock. The other two are PowerSecure, a subsidiary of the Atlanta-based merchant power company Southern Company, and the disaster relief group American Red Cross which installed solar-plus-storage to provide power at schools for more than 24 hours.

Most of the projects last year provide less than 5 megawatts of power and about 86 percent of the installed capacity rely on fossil fuels for the power source. One megawatt powers about 200 homes during a hot summer day in Texas.

Wood Mackenzie predicts that microgrids will become increasingly reliant on renewables, expecting that in five years solar, wind and hydropower-fueled generation will account for 35 percent of installed capacity.

But so far this year, the market for microgrids has been slow to expand because of the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. Shelter-in-place orders and social distancing have delayed permitting, engineering and construction, according to the study.
