A group of students’ parents and supporters of a Jersey City charter school will stage their second protest Wednesday afternoon over the firing of the principal who helped found the school.
The protest outside The Ethical Community Charter School (95 Broadway) is scheduled for 4 p.m., ahead of an online emergency school board meeting at 6:30 p.m. At the meeting, the board is expected to hire an interim principal and approve a firm to begin a search for a permanent replacement for Marta Bergamini.
Board officials said that Bergamini, who has worked on a yearly contract, and the board could not come to an agreement on a new contract. According to online records, Bergamini, who has been at the school since 2009, earned $137,000 a year. She has declined to comment.
The board announced that that the principal would not be returning in September in a letter to parents on July 1. The following day parents protested outside the school.
Vice Principal Elisha Abdelaal, who has also been at the school, first as a teacher, since it was founded, submitted her resignation following the news.
“I am very proud of the school Marta, the staff, the families, and I built together,” she said. “The nonrenewal of Ms. Bergamini has left me deeply concerned for the future of TECCS. My hope is that the pieces can be put back together and TECCS can continue to flourish as the beautiful community it is.”
Erasmia Voukelatos, one of the original parent founders of TECCS, reached out to families to offer help anyway she can.
“Ms. Bergamini possesses a unique combination of skills and qualities that are sadly rare in this field: professionalism, integrity, genuine concern for equity, collaborativeness, authenticity, an warmth with families, staff, children, and community members,” she said. “These qualities speak volumes to all whose lives she touches, and her glowing reputation extends far beyond the walls of TECCS. The optics of this decision do not inspire trust and make me worried for the school’s future.”
