The Paisans Club is coming back in July, ready to break out the music and put away the cannoli.
Tommy Mara and the Crests will headline the Paisans Club show on July 19 at 6 p.m. in SeaBreeze Recreation Center. There will be limited seating and other restrictions due to the Coronavirus.
“This is great news,” Jerry Vicenti, president of the Paisans Club, said in making the announcement. He added that unlike past meetings, no food or desserts – like cannoli – will be served. It will be the club’s first music event since last winter due to the COVID-19 virus shutdown.
“All Coronavirus public safety restrictions will be strictly enforced,” Vicenti said.
That means:
- Limited seating with no tables and all seats six feet apart. The room at Seabreeze usually holds about 350 people, but it will be far less due to restrictions.
- The Paisans Club will not provide coffee, water, ice or desserts.
- Members are allowed to bring their own beverages and they must be placed on the floor next to their seats.
- Only small coolers will be allowed.
- Face masks are requested but if members get within six feet of each other, face masks will be required. Vicenti said all ticketholders should bring their own face masks.
- The club will hold its raffle, as it does at every music event.
- Those first to arrive will be seated first.
The Paisans have been one of the top music clubs in The Villages. The club previously featured nationally known acts such as Gary Lewis, The Diamonds, The Capris, The Duprees, La La Brooks of The Crystals, Dennis Tufano of The Buckinghams, the Drifters, Joey Dee and Peggy March.
“The Paisans Club is not just a show club; it’s an entertainment experience,” Vicenti likes to say. “We work all year to make these events special. We spend a lot of money and we get major acts. That’s why the members turn out.”
Tommy Mara has long been a popular performer in The Villages. He was close friends with the late Johnny Maestro, original lead singer of The Crests.
The Crests were a pioneering doo-wop group during the late 1950s with such hits as “16 Candles” and “The Angels Listened In.” Mara has an operatic voice and one of his favorite numbers is “Cara Mia,” originally done by Jay and the Americans.
Mara has performed for the Paisans Club in the past.
“The Paisans are an Italian club and that’s my heritage,” he said. “It’s a great audience and an intimate room. You can feel the intensity.”
