What we can do is have more exhibition matches. In such matches, you don't have to worry about cheating," he said during a webinar during a webinar hosted by Maharashtra Chess Association along with All India Chess Federation (AICF) on Sunday.
Vidit feels chess will get a fillip if players and organization can join hands. "If an organization and a player come together to popularize the game, it can make a big difference. For example, Magnus Carlsen owns chess24 and they have a series of events happening - 5 to 6 online events. It is doing wonders to the sport," Vidit said.
Just to showcase how popular chess is, Vidit cited the example of the sport topping Google searches since March this year. "There is an option for trends on Google to see what word was searched the most. Until February, one of the highest searched was Virat Kohli. But the term chess was searched more than Virat after March. That shows a positive curve towards chess. Online events are great. Most of the tournaments played in the last few months are in Europe or in the US, I haven't played anything in India. I feel we can have more events in India, it could bring in the audience," he assessed.
