High lake levels continue to damage Northern Michigan shorelines, now wearing away at a popular Petoskey trail.
The Little Traverse Wheelway connects Charlevoix, Petoskey, and Harbor Springs. Now parts of the trail are closed as erosion inches Little Traverse Bay closer ashore. 
“I really like nature, I really like walking.”
Iuliia Fetysenkr spends her break each day walking the Little Traverse Wheelway in Petoskey.
“On the New Year I said ‘I’m going to walk every single day, at least one hour,” Fetysenkr said.
Petoskey city leaders are now working to address the shoreline issues so trail walkers and riders can continue to enjoy it.
“It’s a major issue here,” said Petoskey Mayor John Murphy.
Mayor Murphy tells us they first learned of potential issues in the fall. City leaders got a full report on the shoreline erosion issues during their Monday night meeting.
“I want to be proactive, if we’re not proactive in taking care of this now it’s going to get worse,” Mayor Murphy said.
That report found three problem areas with some on city property, some on private property, and some in Resort Township.
The report suggests building up a rip rap to protect the land from further erosion.
Now the city is working on bringing all impacted parties together.
“This is going to take some time,” Mayor Murphy said.
By the marina, the city is considering a full redesign, which the mayor says estimates could cost several million dollars.
“We’re going to address this and we’re going to take care of this,” Mayor Murphy said.

“I feel better knowing people take care of me, and want me to walk in better conditions,” Fetysenkr said.
