The fair tax amendment was not popular in La Salle County.

The referendum to move Illinois from its current flat tax to graduated income tax failed in La Salle County by a margin of 74.76% to 25.24%, 29,484 to 9,955 in votes counted by end of day Tuesday in unofficial results – and fewer than 1,000 outstanding ballots left to count.

Putnam County tax referendum fails

A referendum to raise property taxes by 0.0025% in Putnam County failed by a better than 2-to-1 margin Tuesday, in a vote of 2,220 to 1,053.

Board member Charlie Lenkaitis, who hosted a series of informational meetings about the referendum, said he was disappointed the referendum didn't pass, but was philisophical, saying the defeated referendum was a setback, but "these things happen."

"We'll keep moving forward," he said, "and we'll go to work for Putnam County."

Putnam County has about 200 outstanding ballots left to count, the county clerk's office said.

Wamhoff leads coroner race

Janice Wamhoff leads the race for Bureau County Coroner.

Final results will not be posted until Nov. 17, but Wamhoff, a Princeton Democrat, is currently in the lead over Reka Albrecht, an Ohio Republican, with 8,889 votes (52.89%) to Albrecht’s 7,916 votes (47.11%).

Bureau County Clerk Matt Eggers estimated that there are still a couple hundred outstanding ballots that need to make their way to the courthouse in the next two weeks to finalize the tallies.

Wamhoff spent her evening at the Democratic headquarters in Princeton while watching the results roll in. At the end of the evening she said if she's the winner, she'd be grateful.

"It's been my job for 32 years, and [the] people of Bureau County are the ones I'm here to serve and to help," she said.

Miller leads for Bureau County Clerk

Republican challenger Russell Miller, of Ohio, leads Democratic incumbent Dawn Reglin for Bureau County Clerk in a race too close to call when the polls closed Tuesday night.

Miller leads the Manlius Democrat by 51 votes, 8,283 (50.15%) to 8,232 (49.85%), but there are still some 200 outstanding ballots to be counted, according to Bureau County Clerk Matt Eggers.

"I'm pleasantly surprised the people of Bureau County gave me their support towards this position," Miller said. "I realize it's unofficial until the [Nov.] 17th. I'm just going to be waiting to see how everything goes with the final vote tally and check on any problems that might turn up. I'm not expecting any issues."

Reglin, who was first elected four years ago when incumbent Mary Romanelli Dremann did not seek reelection after one term, could not be reached for comment Tuesday night. She began working as deputy circuit clerk in 2005.

La Salle County Board seats

Incumbent Randy Freeman (R-Lostant) leads with 1,165 votes to Gerald Senko's (D-Kangley) 784 votes. Freeman has served on the board for more than two decades.

Douglas Stockley (R-Earlville), who has served on the Zoning Board of Appeals, garnered 1,087 votes and Tom McNamara (D-Ottawa) has received 969. Steve Tuftie (R-Ottawa) did not run for re-election in this district.

La Salle County Clerk Lori Bongartz said there are less than 1,000 outstanding votes that may be counted, as the county clerk's office has the next two weeks to receive mail-in ballots postmarked by Nov. 3.
