EMERYVILLE — The MOMOlicious food truck that specializes Nepalese themed food was supposed to reopen for business Friday, the third anniversary of it’s debut, after being shut down since March because of the coronvavirus.
But as of Friday morning, the reopening planned for Pleasant Hill was not happening, as the truck was stolen Wednesday night from an Emeryville parking lot and had not been recovered, one of its owners said.
The customized red truck, 24 by 10 feet with specialized equipment and distinctive markings, valued at $100,000, was taken from a lot at 63rd Street and Overland Avenue near its commissary kitchen while its owners were inside. The theft was discovered around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday about 30 minutes after it had been parked.
The engine had been left running running with the keys in the ignition after the battery was earlier jump started because of non-use.
Sudeep Khatiwada, one of the co-owners, said Friday the lot is usually pretty safe and that the truck had been left open overnight in the past with nothing happening.
At first he and his partner thought what happened may have been a prank but soon realized that was not the case.
“I couldn’t believe it,” he said. “Who would want to do such a thing? We are good with everyone.”
Khatiwada said the theft has left him devastated. It is the first one they owned and he said he and his partner “care about it very much. We could always count on it.”
Khatiwada said he is not sure if the business will survive if the truck is not found. They have another truck that is used in San Francisco, but it does not do as well as the one stolen.
“It’s gong to be difficult to keep going, very difficult,” he said. The stolen truck “goes everywhere. It was the one making the money.”
The missing truck’s license plate is 78618F2. Anyone with information about its whereabouts is asked to call Emeryville police at 510-596-3700 or the truck’s owners at 415-691-0180 or 510-926-7388.
