Loyal Legion, SE Portland’s popular beer hall, opens Saturday in downtown Beaverton - OregonLive

Loyal Legion, the popular Southeast Portland beer hall, on Saturday expands into Beaverton, where it will open its first satellite location in a historic downtown retail district undergoing a resurgence of dining and drinking options.

A grand opening celebration at 4 p.m. will officially re-christen the former home of the Bank of Beaverton. In 1930, the bank built the Spanish Colonial-style building at Southwest Watson Avenue and Farmington Road, and it most recently was home to an Arthur Murray Dance Studio before it became available when the studio moved.

Loyal Legion has retained the architecture but remade the building’s decor from top to bottom with its signature modern take on the classic cocktail lounge, gracing the space with its recognizable big, blue leather booths, dark hardwood floors and elegant horseshoe bar underneath a vaulted central ceiling.

The beer hall also will carry the calling card of the original location, which opened six years ago, boasting a beer list 99 strong and a fully stocked bar focused on a large collection of whiskey and bourbon at prices below market standard. The full kitchen, which will soon add lunch service, will offer a food menu similar to the original as well: burgers and sandwiches, with up to half the menu being plant-based.

Kurt Huffman, whose ChefStable restaurant group operates Loyal Legion, said economic struggles caused by the pandemic threatened to scuttle the project, which was initially scheduled to open in July. Construction only began in May.

“We almost had to give up on it,” Huffman said. “The deal was on hold for 10 months, but once we realized we were going to be OK, that Loyal Legion in Portland was going to be OK, we knew we were going to go forward.

“There was a lot of interest from investors in the Beaverton area, which really helped,” said Huffman, who has said the Washington County city selected ChefStable as part of its plan to sell the building. “But it’s definitely one of the hardest build-outs we’ve ever had. This is the latest we’ve ever missed our initial open date.”

Loyal Legion is the latest addition to a historic downtown experiencing a revitalization. Ex Novo Brewing was the first brewery to move into the area, opening its pizza pub directly across the street from the Loyal Legion site in 2019.

Breakside Brewery of Portland also has announced plans to open a beer garden accompanying a food cart pod a block behind Ex Novo, and Binary Brewing of Southeast Portland is building a new brewery and taproom in the former home of Beaverton Bakery a few blocks east.

In addition to the cresting wave of craft beer, Old Town Beaverton has attracted a strong pool of new restaurants, many with Portland ties. Those include Washington County outposts of Big’s Chicken, Afuri Izakaya, Top Burmese, Sizzle Pie and The Sudra, which have joined established restaurants such as Decarli and Nak Won.

For anyone still uncomfortable dining inside due to the pandemic, the city has shut down a stretch of Southwest First Street east of Watson in front of Nak Won and new Korean restaurant 1st Street Pocha, and it has added seating that is available to customers of any nearby restaurant.

Syndicate Wine Bar, which opened in summer 2019, and Lionheart Coffee, which opened in November 2019, have also bolstered the downtown core’s offerings. Lauren Reese, who owns Lionheart with husband Ben Reese, said they are excited about the efforts put into revitalizing the downtown core of Beaverton.

“We have been singing the praises of Beaverton as a diverse, livable community for years, and it really feels like people outside of Beaverton are starting to catch on,” she said. “Right now we are seeing a lot of really exciting Portland-based businesses coming in, which we are super excited about, and I think that has the potential of encouraging some more start-up Beaverton-based businesses to pop-up in the future.”

Loyal Legion Beaverton will have inside seating for 184 people, including the main hall, a side dining room, a room for small groups in the bank’s former safe, and the upstairs cocktail bar. That bar, which has not been named yet but will be a corollary to the original location’s basement Voysey bar, Huffman said, is scheduled to open in January.

The 3,000-square-foot patio, built with pavers laid over the original parking lot, is scheduled to open in April. A pergola will cover about 1,800 square feet, including 600 square feet of a true covered lid to protect against the rain. The patio will include fire pits for warmth, and a rolling outdoor bar is planned for next summer.

The beer halls are named for an old logger’s union employment agency — the Loyal Legion of Loggers and Lumbermen Employment. Huffman in 2008 discovered a large “Four L” sign as he was building his first restaurant, and the sign now hangs as a centerpiece in Loyal Legion Portland.

“We feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to take over a historic building like this,” Huffman said, “and to become part of the Beaverton restaurant community.”
