EAST LANSING, MI - When faced with a pandemic, what’s your local neighborhood bar to do?
At The Peanut Barrel in East Lansing, owners Joe and Jennifer Bell decided it was time to “have fun and make you smile.”
That’s why they put eight “survival kit” specials exclusively on their take out menu this week, including discount offers for Long Island Iced Teas and olive burgers.
“We thought this would be a fun way to do it,” said Jennifer, whose husband has worked at the bar since it opened in 1973.
“We expect a long Covid winter...businesses will struggle to stay afloat, as will customers and our community," she added.
The top sellers so far:
Sunshine in a Glass: A growler of their signature Long Islands, which consists of about 7 cocktails, and two Peanut Barrel pint glasses, for $40.
The drink has “all the liquors in it,” Joe Bell told us when we did our search for Michigan’s Best College Eats, “plus a hint of sour and a splash of Coke."
“There’s just enough booze in it to make you feel good and keep you at a good level,” he added.
The drink is so powerful that there is a strict two-drink limit for dine-in/patio customers. (You must be 21 or older to order it to go.)

Olive You For Keeping it Local: Their famous Olive Burger, on a bun of your choice, but it typically is served on pumpernickel bread, plus fries and a “Spartan surprise,” for $11.90 (cheese is extra).
Other kits include a growler of M-43, the popular Rodeo Burger, chili cheese fries, tuna melt and grilled cheese, all with fun names, and special gifts or candy.
“The Growlers of Long Islands are flying out the door,” Jennifer said Wednesday afternoon.
“I’m thinking as weather changes, we will definitely see more take out. And should there be a shutdown or further restrictions on bars and restaurants, we want to be ready to jump on an increase demand in take out. People like the creativity, but take out alcohol is still quite novel for Michigan... folks love it in any form.”

The to-go survival kits can be ordered at 517-351-0608. Customers can drop in and pick it up or have it delivered alley-side. It is not available for 3rd party delivery.
The Peanut Barrel has been a favorite stop for John Gonzalez and Amy Sherman of Michigan’s Best for many years.
We stopped there in 2014 for Michigan’s Best Neighborhood Bar, returned for Michigan’s Best Fries in 2017, and made it a top destination for best “college eats” in 2018.
