Gleason - According to the American National Red Cross, every 2 seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood or platelets. One organization in north-central Wisconsin is doing something about the ongoing need for blood by holding a blood drive.

The Gleason Area Lions Club held the blood drive Sunday alongside their popular pancake breakfast to better serve the Gleason community.

Chuck McCrory said, "we've been doing this for a number of years to get the community involved in a few different things and provide something back to the community as well as doing the blood drive," said McCrory.

Getting people involved in rural community events can sometimes be difficult, so the Lions provided an incentive, a free breakfast for those who donated.
"We believe it helps, it's not the sole purpose. Many people donate blood just because they want to and we try to give them a little extra benefit by providing a free breakfast for them as well," continued McCrory.

The blood drive was conducted by the Community Blood Center, a non-profit organization serving Wisconsin and the upper Peninsula of Michigan. The Gleason Lions hope events like the blood drive help to spark more involvement by groups and organizations in and around Gleason.
