Proud Eagle Scout father Rhett Rollyson says his son earned that distinguished rank thanks to dedicated Scout Master, Mike Wanner.
"Mike really invested a lot of time in Brendan," said Rollyson. "During parts of the Eagle Scout process, you know as you get a little older sometimes you need that little push to kind of get you to the finish line, and Mike was really instrumental in pushing him to the finish line."
The scouting community and students and staff at Plant City High School are mourning Wanner's death.
"He was a really sweet teacher," said Plant City High School junior Logan Dame.
"He would always say hi to you in the hallways, he was just a real sweet dude. There was never like a time that I remember him frowning, always a happy dude," Dame said.
Hillsborough County Public Schools says the school was notified the Earth, space ,science, and forensics teacher was exposed to coronavirus off campus, then tested positive himself. He did not return to campus.
"It's like getting kicked in the stomach," said Rollyson. "You know, you hear COVID and you see how it affects people's lives, but when it hits close to home that's when you really feel it."
A community feeling a loss for a man who impacted students in the district since 1998, he started at PCHS in 2004.
"Being a teacher as well, you're very impactful in kids' lives, and being a teacher as well as a scout master just shows that he cared about the next generation and he cared about the youth and he wanted to really help them achieve success," said Rollyson.
The district says grief counselors are available at Plant City High School for students and staff needing to talk through their grief.
