Popular Bear Lake area in Rocky Mountain National Park reopens after East Troublesome fire - Greeley Tribune

Bear Lake Road in Rocky Mountain National Park reopened Thursday, four weeks after it was closed due to the encroachment of the East Troublesome fire.

All areas east of Bear Lake Road are open now, according to a news release, along with the popular Bear Lake trail system. The trail to the top of Flattop Mountain, a prominent landmark near Bear Lake that tops out at 12,300 feet, is open to the summit but is closed past the summit to west of the Continental Divide. The Odessa/Fern Lake Trail is closed at the Odessa/Flattop Trail junction, and the Bierstadt Trail is closed at the Bear Lake/Bierstadt Trail junction.

Most areas west of Bear Lake are still closed, including Moraine Park Road at the junction of Bear Lake Road and the Moraine Park campground. Trails that remain closed include the Fern Lake Trail, Cub Lake Trail, the Mill Creek Basin, Hollowell Park and Bierstadt Trail. The west side of the park remains closed at the Grand Lake entrance, and Trail Ridge Road closed this week for the winter.

Other areas on the east side of the park that are still closed include Upper Beaver Meadows Road, the North Boundary Trail, the North Fork Trail, and Mummy Pass, Stormy Pass, Commanche Peak and Mirror Lake Trails.

Park officials say about 9% of the park was impacted by the East Troublesome and Cameron Peak fires, which burned a total of 400,000 acres in north central Colorado, including approximately 30,000 in the park.
