Panera was my third home in high school (the first being home, duh, the second being school, also duh)—my friends and I gathered at our neighborhood Panera nearly every day after school. When we moved away from each other, Panera became our reunion spot. Something about the chain felt comforting; maybe it was the massive bread bowls that put us into a coma, the signature fire places and classical music, or the too-good-to-be-true green tea (it's just juice, let's be real).
...This is all to say: I have a lot of feelings about Panera and getting to retry the entire menu in one sitting has been a dream of mine for, at the bare minimum, 10 years. Here's my top picks that I highly recommend for any Panera-novice:
Best Tea: Green Tea
It's essentially a grown up Pacific Cooler Capri Sun, and I am *not* mad about it. It's like a juicy kiwi and a green tea came together as one.
Best Sandwich: Toasted Frontega Chicken
I couldn't put this sandwich down. The smoked, pulled chicken is tender, the black pepper focaccia is soft yet toasted for a lovely crunch while the basil and chipotle mayo takes it over the edge. Every part of this sandwich plays together in harmony, I could write poems about it.
Close second: Chipotle Bacon Melt. You have my heart. Still thinking about you.
Best Flatbread: Margherita
Panera unveiled flatbreads in the fall of 2020 as a permanent menu item and I truly can't believe it took this long for them to do it. They have three flatbread options: cheese, margherita, and chipotle chicken and bacon.
Best Salad: BBQ Chicken
Two words: Frizzled. Onions. The BBQ ranch dressing and apple cider vinegar BBQ sauce is tangy and creamy, making you almost forget you're eating an entire bowl of romaine. The chicken, black beans, and corn fill you up without weighing you down making this the ideal light yet fulfilling salad.
Best Bowl: Baja
This is like a deconstructed burrito bowl. The brown rice and quinoa mix is hearty and feels like a full meal. The fact this bowl comes with avocado and it doesn't cost extra already gives this a plus one in my book, but what really sold me was the feta chunks and salsa verde dressing. Good for you food doesn't have to be boring!
Best Soup: Mac & Cheese
I know. I know. This is controversial to *not* choose the broccoli cheddar soup; after all, mac & cheese isn't even a soup! It's a pasta! I don't make the soup rules at Panera. Take one bite of these tender shells mixed in rich, creamy, sharp cheddar cheese and tell me you miss broccoli cheddar. You can't! This kind of mac deserves its own category.
Best Dessert: Kitchen Sink Cookie
I rarely make it to dessert at Panera when I usually dine in; but that needs to change ASAP because the kitchen sink cookie exists. If you've never had a kitchen sink cookie before, it's usually a mix of whatever you can find in your pantry, often leading to a crunchy, salty chocolate chip cookie—and that's exactly what happened here. This massive chocolatey cookie tastes like caramel, butterscotch, pretzels, and potato chips had a baby. Just trust me on this one.
