Fire damages popular Oakland bait shop - East Bay Times

OAKLAND — A popular East Oakland bait shop that has been closed since shelter in place orders went into effect, was damaged in a fire Wednesday morning, officials said.

The fire erupted about 6:30 a.m. Wednesday in a mezzanine storage area at Phu Quy Bait and Supplies, 1805 14th Avenue, officials said.

Smoke was coming from the building when firefighters arrived on the scene and it eventually spread to the roof, officials said.

Twenty-five firefighters responded and the fire was declared under control at 6:45 a.m., Battalion Chief Heather Mozdean said.

No injuries were reported.

Mozdean said the cause of the fire is under investigation and a damage figure was not available.

The store has been a fixture in the Clinton neighborhood for years and has a good reputation for its live bait, supplies and repairing fishing gear.

It has been closed the entire time since shelter in place regulations were issued and a sign on the front door tells people to stay safe.  How much impact the fire damage will have on an eventual reopening is not yet known.

Saki Phol, a longtime customer, was at the scene and said  what  happened to the store “is a blg loss for Oakland.”
