OAKLAND — A popular East Oakland bait shop was damaged in a fire Wednesday morning, officials said.

The fire erupted about 6:30 a.m. Wednesday in a mezzanine storage area at Phu Quy Bait and Supplies, 1805 14th Avenue, officials said.

Smoke was coming from the building when firefighters arrived on the scene and it eventually spread to the roof, officials said.

Twenty-five firefighters responded and the fire was declared under control at 6:45 a.m., Battalion Chief Heather Mozdean said.

No injuries were reported.

Mozdean said the cause of the fire is under investigation and a damage figure was not available.

Mozdean said the store would probably not be able to open for awhile.

The store has been a fixture in the Clinton neighborhood for years and has a good reputation for its live bait, supplies and repairing fishing gear.
