WACO, Texas (KWTX) With many medical supplies running low across the country, one store is helping people take protection into their own hands..literally.
The phones were ringing off the hook at Joann Fabrics and Crafts in Waco's Central Texas Marketplace Monday with customers trying to get their hands on free, DIY mask kits.
"We do have children sizes and adult sizes," said store employee 'Debbie.'
Store officials said they'd handed out an estimated 200-300 of them Monday alone and had to improvise when the elastic ran out.
"Right now we' don't have elastic, we have grosgrain ribbon," she said.
Each kit comes with enough fabric to make five masks.
Officials hope people will return to the store to donate the masks to area hospitals.
There's a drop-off bin located at the front of each store.
Sewing instructions for the masks are available on the store's website.
