Senior men's league remains popular at Clear Lake Golf Club - The Pioneer

BIG RAPIDS – It’s September and most area golf leagues are headed into their final weeks.

But it’s been a fun summer for the men’s senior league at the Clear Lake Golf Club.

Bob Shields, 72, has been playing and working with the 3 o’clock seniors league at the club on Mondays. There’s also a 6 o’clock club.

There’s usually 12 teams of two seniors for the 3 o’clock league.

“Every year, we have the same guy as a partner,” Shields said. “I’m with John Currie.”

The league started out the first of May each Monday afternoon and will go into the first week of October. It’s nine holes each week and a different nine on various nights.

“The front nine is more wide open but I score better on the back,” Shields said.

There’s a mixture of novice and maybe some who take it more serious.

Shields said many golfers from the men’s league at Falcon Head Golf Course came over to the Clear Lake Club when Falcon Head closed down during the offseason.

“We all get along and everyone is having a good time,” Shields smiled. “Guys I have known since my childhood I’m getting reacquainted with.

He’s lived in the area most of his life and Shields said he has played the game seriously 20 years.

He’s had two holes-in-one while playing in Florida.

Shields is also in the 6 p.m. Thursday Couples League at Clear Lake.

“You just show up and play,” he said. “We’re looking to get more. It’s a fun league.”

VOLLEYBALL

Big Rapids falls

CEDAR SPRINGS – Big Rapids’ volleyball team dropped two matches on Tuesday night.

The Cards lost 25-22, 25-22 to Tri County and 25-16, 25-16 to Cedar Springs.

Big Rapids plays Thursday at McBain.
