Durham, N.C. — A popular Durham night club and bar is closing its doors indefinitely after citing concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic.
Shooters Saloon, on West Morgan Street, announced on social media they would be closing on Wednesday.
"We care for all of you. We care for your well-being," a post from Shooters Saloon's Instagram page said. "With all that being said, we hope by us doing our part and others too maybe we can knock COVID-19 out of here."
The club is a popular spot for Duke University students and WRAL Investigates found there were several complaints filed about the business not enforcing COVID-19 protocols. In one complaint, Duke Student Government asked the city to crack down on the club and enforce occupancy limits and the statewide mask mandate.
Shooters' announcement comes as more than 300 COVID-19 cases were reported among Duke students in one week. The university extended its mask mandate to outdoor areas on campus as well as inside buildings on Monday after reporting the case load.
Videos shared with WRAL Investigates in April showed students, unmasked, shoulder-to-shoulder in the bar.
"It looked just like it was before the pandemic. There were hundreds of students in there, unmasked, not socially distancing," said one Duke student who visited Shooters on April 3. "People were having trouble keeping their balance because they were so packed together."
At the time, the owner of Shooters denied the allegations that the bar was violating capacity limits and mask requirements.
Duke students and faculty are required to be vaccinated against coronavirus. Ninety-eight percent of Duke students and 92 percent of faculty and staff are vaccinated, officials said. The other 8 percent of Duke employees have been given an Oct. 1 deadline to get their shots, and those who don't will be fired, officials have said.
