Staten Islander creates popular coronavirus parody: ‘Mask On’ - SILive.com

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Not wearing a mask when you’re in public? New Springville resident Habeeb Sheikh has a song for you.

Sheikh, who goes by “The Sheikh Show” online, recently created a parody video of the popular song “Mask Off” by Future.

The parody, focused around coronavirus, is titled “Mask On” and has lyrics reminding viewers to sanitize and wear masks if they have to leave the house.

“It’s another way of spreading awareness," he explained. “I’m not trying to make fun of the situation, I’m trying to bring light to it.”

The video is focused on a character who is paranoid that he is coming down with coronavirus. Sheikh said it is partially inspired by his personal experience.

“I’ve felt it personally where I’ve coughed waking up in the morning and I’m like, ‘Oh, man. Is this it?'" Sheikh explained. “It’s a part of the panic that everyone is going through.”

Sheikh is currently attending the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University. Since classes have moved online, he said that he has a lot more free time.

“While I’ve been home, I’ve been making more videos,” he explained. “I’ve really been taking off during this quarantine period."

It was his first time ever writing or rapping a song, but he is a D.J. so the production came naturally to him. Because he is a D.J., he also had professional equipment to record with.

He followed the lyrical format that Future used to write the song, which Sheikh says is “similar to a haiku.”

“Mask On” is the first parody video that Sheikh has ever made, and he said that he is surprised with how well it’s done.

Sheikh initially started an Instagram series called “Everything but Coronavirus.” He wanted to share some positive news and take the focus off of all the negativity that has been spreading.

“I was just trying to get people’s mind off of coronavirus and keep up my creativity," he said. "Even though I understand the gravity of the situation, there is other stuff going on in the world that can keep people smiling.”

Creating content isn’t a new hobby for Sheikh. In his undergraduate studies at Binghamton University he received two degrees: cinema and political science.

Despite there being reason to worry, Sheikh doesn’t think the pandemic should get people down.

“People are testing positive, but you should stay positive.”
