Hiker, dog caught in animal trap on popular South Dakota trail - New York Post

A hiker and her dog got caught in an animal trap on a popular trail in South Dakota, according to a report.

Dede Ferrar and her pooch Tiger were finishing up their hike near the Seth Bullock Lookout Tower in Black Hills National Forest when the “traumatic” incident happened last week, ABC-affiliate KOTA-TV reported.

Ferrar heard her dog wailing and when she ran over to him, she saw his paw caught in the metal trap — and got her finger caught in it while trying to rescue him.

“I was still panicking and not thinking exactly clearly. So I used my fingers to pry it off of his paw and it wasn’t easy and I couldn’t do it without getting my own fingers caught in the trap,” Ferrar told the outlet.

“So there I was down on the ground trapped,” she said. “It hurt really bad, really bad and I was still in a panic and I cried out to God to help me because I didn’t know what to do in that second.”

Ferrar eventually managed to free herself from the metal clamp by pushing down on its sides, she told the outlet.

She said Tiger “was only caught in there for about a minute and I was only caught in there for about a minute, but it was excruciating pain.”

Ferrar called it “a terrible, traumatic experience” as she noted that she and her four-legged companion were hiking along a popular trail.

‘We weren’t tromping off the trail. There shouldn’t be a trap that is a footstep off of a trail … Especially being on this trail that is popular,” she told the news outlet.

The South Dakota Department of Game Fish and Parks said people are allowed to set traps anywhere on public land.

A local conservation officer told KOTA-TV that the trap was likely set by an amateur.
