In a digital age, area libraries are thriving.
Libraries in Hartland, Howell, Fowlerville and Hamburg Township released 2019 reports that show not only an increase in circulation numbers but also reveal an interesting snapshot of what patrons are reading and watching in those communities.
The Brighton District Library was the only library in the county not to see an increase in circulation numbers, something staff attributes to five months of significant construction.
At the Brighton District Library, Howell Carnegie District Library, Hamburg Township Library and Pinckney Communtiy Library, “Where the Crawdads Sing,” a crime drama novel set in North Carolina topped the list of the most checked out items.
Nearly a half-million items circulated in Howell
Circulation numbers have steadily grown at the Howell Carnegie District Library topping out at 470,768 items in 2019.
"We believe the increase in circulation is directly related to the number of e-materials purchased between 2018 and 2019," Scott Draplik, circulation supervisor for the library said.
He said the significant presence of movies on the top 10 list has to do with the quick seven-day turnaround versus 21 days for books.

Youth, teen series dominate in Fowlerville
Circulation numbers have steadily grown at the Fowlerville District Library the last several years. In 2019, more than 40,000 items were circulated, nearly 20% more than 2017.
"We moved to a more visible location in our community in June of 2018. We have steadily seen an increase in all of our stats from circulating items, cards made and renewed, program attendance overall, number of people through the door, number of Wi-Fi usages, and how many outreach events we attend, all with the same size staff," said Beth Lowe, director of the library.
She said DVDs have historically been popular among the library's patrons due to limited incomes and slow download speeds in the village.
While a movie is the number one item circulated, the majority of Fowlerville's list is made up of youth and teen book series such as "Pokemon Adventures."

Hamburg Township residents focus on films
At the Hamburg Township Library patrons focused their attention on movies in 2019.
Holly Hentz, Hamburg library director said checkout times for movies is a strong factor in circulation numbers.
"New DVDs (anything up to a year old) are checked out for one week and many have reserves on them, which will not allow for renewals. All books check out for three weeks," she said.
The library saw a 4,000-item jump in circulation in 2019, something Hentz said goes along with an increase in library patrons and township residents.

Best sellers key in Hartland
Cromaine Library in Hartland saw an increase in circulation in 2019, jumping to 357,400 items from 277,367 in 2018. Hartland's patrons also enjoyed the library's Wi-Fi mobile hotspot, making it the most circulated item last year.
"The shifts in circulation for us probably have a lot to do with our being under construction throughout 2017, ending with our 90th anniversary and grand opening late September 2017," Cecilia Marlow, director for the library said.
Marlow believes digital and e-resources also play a role the increase in circulation.
Youth and teen staff noted the Riordan series, graphic novels and classic picture books are flying off the shelves, partly because of new ways to market them, such as Surprise Storytime bundles, she said.
"For adult readers it is always about the bestsellers. 'Where the Crawdad Sings' is one of those books that got caught up in person to person, then book club 'hand selling,'" Marlow said.
She said the library does not have a way to track top circulated fiction and non-fiction items.

Pinckney enjoy films, new mobile hot spot
Pinckney Community Public Library is consistent with the county trends and saw a nearly 3,000-item circulation increase in 2019. Similar to libraries in Brighton and Hartland, patrons in Pinckney checked out a mobile hot spot more than any other item last year.
Hope Siasoco, director of the library, said she is unclear what caused the jump in circulation but she'd "like to think it's more people discovering that the library has a lot more to offer than traditional books."
The library added more ways for residents to access the digital collection and went fine-free for most of the items, she said.
