Tex-Mex restaurant with San Antonio roots finally opens in Keller - The Dallas Morning News

Las Palapas, the popular San Antonio Tex-Mex restaurant that’s been a fixture in the city for 40 years, finally has a North Texas presence.

The company opened a location in Keller on Monday, and it’s the first in a number of stores planned for D-FW, according to area manager Cipriano Morales.

“We’re trying to branch out and develop other restaurants in different cities,” Morales said Wednesday.

With nearly 20 locations spread across the Alamo City — plus two in New Braunfels and one that opened in March in College Station — the cult chain, known for its cheap (starting at $.79), all-day breakfast tacos, sopes, menudo on the weekends and margaritas that can be ordered from the drive-thru, has been a staple of San Antonio cuisine since 1981.

Founder Ron Acosta and his family operated the company until two years ago, when it was purchased by Wayne Detmar, Morales said.

Since then, Las Palapas has had its eye on expansion. The fast-casual chain — of which some stores are corporate-owned and others are franchised — will open in Austin, Houston and Corpus Christi in the near future, Morales said.

But since Monday, the Keller location, open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day, might be the busiest of the bunch. Morales said business has been “crazy” since opening the restaurant, which has sit-down service, a full bar and a drive-thru.

Curbside margaritas for $2.99, in flavors like mango and chamoy will do that to you, he said.
