Lions’ Sheila Ford Hamp among least popular owners in NFL, survey says - MLive.com

DETROIT -- The Detroit Lions are 0-8 and in the early stages of yet another rebuild.

And they’ve still won just a single playoff game since 1957.

This, combined with little hope for success in the immediate future, makes it unsurprising that Lions’ owner Sheila Ford Hamp is among the least popular team owners in the National Football League.

That’s according to a survey of Google search volume and social media sentiment analysis conducted by money.co.uk as part of its Beloved Billionaires study.

“While teams move on from disappointing quarterbacks, bad head coaches, and underperforming general managers every offseason, there’s one position that rarely changes no matter how loudly fans complain - the team’s ownership,” the report reads.

“With some franchises having been passed down through families for generations, it’s no wonder that lifelong supporters can develop some pretty strong feelings towards the people at the top, especially when they consistently fail to put their team in a position to win.”

The survey used Google search date from 30 countries from September 2020 to September 2021, as well as social media mentions across Facebook, Twitter and Reddit to determine the rankings.

A random sample of approximately 600 mentions per owner/CEO were taken, which were then subject to sentiment analysis. Once collected, a weighting was applied to both metrics to give an overall ‘popularity index’ of the people most searched and most praised or criticized owners using a min-max normalization formula.

Sheila Ford Hamp succeeded her mother Martha Firestone Ford as principal owner and chairman of the Lions on June 23, 2020. Sheila Ford Hamp received a popularity score of just 17. The only owners who finished lower were Woody Johnson (Jets) and embattled Washington Football Team owner Dan Snyder.

David Tepper (Panthers), Stan Kroenke (Rams), Jerry Jones (Cowboys), Shahid Khan (Jaguars) and Robert Kraft (Patriots) are the top five most popular owners, according to the survey.

The Ford family has owned a share of the Lions since William Clay Ford purchased minority shares in the franchise in 1961. Ford became the sole owner in 1963.
