In order to make their services more appealing for those worried about the cost of everything, online streaming services have been leaning toward ad-supported versions of their subscriptions more than ever. The next one to join this approach being HBO Max.
Of course, this practice isn’t new as HULU has been doing it for quite some time now. However, it has since become more of a trend with many companies offering this as a “cheaper” option and an additional approach toward making their normal subscriptions appear to have more value.
Paramount+ was one of the most recent to apply this method to their subscription options. Given, the company had already practiced this approach with CBS All Access (which has become Paramount+). Now, HBO Max is the next to take on this approach by offering the same two-tier selection–one with “limited” commercials, one without.
Remember when “paying” for TV always meant getting rid of the commercials when cable companies first started to compete with OTA, kind of like SiriusXM is to radio now? (full disclosure, this could be a trick question because this was mostly before my time as well).
Sometime this year, HBO plans to roll out a more affordable ad-supported subscription tier to help draw additional users in. They promised “limited” advertising like the rest, while also limiting the tier from having access to certain major releases (another ploy to promote the more expensive tier).
The current price for HBO Max is $14.99 (which makes options like Pramount+ and Disney+ seem quite attractive at their lower price tags) and there is no word yet on how much the new tier will run.
