Slowly but surely, Portland is surfacing from the pandemic.
The latest Rose City institution to announce it will re-open is CC Slaughters, a popular gay bar and nightclub for nearly 40 years.
The establishment, located in Old Town at 219 N.W. Davis St., stunned and saddened customers last fall when it announced it was closing.
Known for its drag shows and energetic dance scene, CC Slaughters had left open the possibility of reopening at some point, but it sounded unlikely.

“I really don’t know what the future is going to hold for us,” owner Bruce Rice told The Oregonian/OregonLive in October as emergency federal assistance waned. “I see businesses all around me closing right now. If the government doesn’t come up with something else, then I really think a lot more are going to close. I might be one of those.”
The government ultimately did come up with something -- a Paycheck Protection Program loan, Willamette Week reported.
And so the popular nightclub is back.

“We are excited to announce that CC Slaughters Portland will be reopening our doors to the general public in mid-April,” its website now states. “We will be focusing all our efforts on making our bar a safe space for our customers. We will be requiring our staff as well as our guests to follow every rule put into place by the health authority as well as the bar management. We look forward to seeing you all very soon and doing so in a safe, responsible and respectful way.”
Those rules mean the dance floor will remain closed for now, and the number of people allowed inside will be limited. But it will still be CC Slaughters.
