
For a fifth straight year, if you’re going for an original baby name, you may want to steer clear of Liam.
Liam was the most frequently given baby name in New Jersey for a fifth straight year in 2019, according to federal Social Security data. There were 634 new Liams in the Garden State last year, a slight drop from 662 the year prior.

Michael, a name that once dominated the chart for 49 straight years, now sits 10th overall and sixth among boys' names. 2019 marked the 22nd straight year that Michael has dropped in usage.
Emma led the way for the third straight year among girls' names. It was used 517 times, just six ahead of Olivia.

The top eight boys' names begin with just four letters — J, L, M and N. Meanwhile, the girls' names trend toward those that begin with a vowel, as do six of the top nine girls' names. The highest ranking boy’s name beginning with a vowel — Alexander — doesn’t appear until the No. 11 spot.
Among the names that just barely snuck into the top 100 on each side were Yehuda, Kai and Xavier, at Nos. 98, 99 and 100 for boys. And Aaliyah, Brooke and Everly for girls.
