Looking for Halloween costume ideas? The 2020 holiday may look different due to the coronavirus pandemic — the CDC considers traditional trick-or-treating a “high risk” for Covid-19 — but you can still expect lots of people to dress up for Oct. 31 fun.
This year’s most popular Halloween costumes will certainly include references to the coronavirus with an emphasis on face masks, social distancing, frontline workers, and notable figures like Dr. Anthony Fauci. But there will also be a wide variety of people dressing up like their favorite movies, TV shows and musicians, as always.
The best-selling Halloween costumes on Amazon include “Harry Potter,” Baby Yoda (a.k.a. The Child from “The Mandalorian”), “Beetlejuice," Ghost Face from “Scream,” superheroes like The Flash, and “Toy Story” characters like Buzz, Woody and Mr. & Mrs. Potato Head. Other characters like Princess Leia and Darth Vader from “Star Wars,” Jack and Sally from “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” and horror icons like Freddy Krueger (“A Nightmare on Elm Street”) and Jason Voorhees (“Friday the 13th”) are also popular.
HalloweenCostumes.com also lists some of its most popular additions for 2020, such as Sonic the Hedgehog and Scooby Doo, who both had big screen adaptations this past year, and more popular superheroes like Miles Morales (“Spider-Man”) and Harley Quinn (“Birds of Prey”).
Timely pop culture references are always a hit. PopSugar notes creative Halloween costumes this year may include Megan Thee Stallion and Cardi B’s “WAP” music video outfits, Harry Styles' “Watermelon Sugar,” Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams' “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga" characters Lars and Sigrit, and HBO’s “Watchmen" cast. Expect to see “Tiger King” standouts Joe Exotic and Carole Baskin, too, and plenty of tributes to late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
Business Insider reports L.A. artist Jason Adcock is selling “Karen” Halloween masks on Etsy, capitalizing on the popular term used to describe middle-aged white women who go viral with actions perceived as racist or entitled. (Amy Cooper, who was charged with filing a false police report in New York after calling 911 to claim she was being threatened by “an African American man,” was known as “Central Park Karen.”) Adcock even combined the meme with the pandemic for a “Karen-19” mask.
Group costume ideas for 2020 include “The Baby-Sitters Club” reboot, “The Umbrella Academy,” Broadway’s “Hamilton" and the Emmy-winning “Schitt’s Creek.”
And since it’s an election year, politics will also play a role. Some people will dress up like President Donald Trump and Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, or make references to hot button issues like protests, the border wall and climate change.
According to BestProducts.com, 47% of Americans dressed up for Halloween last year and spent more than $3.2 billion on their outfits. Even if many end up wearing costumes at home and attending virtual parties over Zoom, there’s still fun to be had this Oct. 31.
