EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ -- Maureen Berzok, Editor of TAPinto East Brunswick, appeared on TAPintoTV’s weekly Sunday television show on News 12+ to share ideas and tips about starting your own victory garden during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Berzok told host Stephanie Willoughby that she spoke with local farmer Jim Giamarese, of Giamarese Farm in East Brunswick, to get his ideas on starting a home garden. “Giamarese Farm is an essential part of our suburban community,” Berzok said.
Giamarese suggested certain vegetables for beginners, how to start growing in pots or window baskets indoors, and even asserted that “almost anybody can grow a tomato.”
In both World War I and II, people were encouraged to start their own gardens at home, called “victory gardens.” In war time, gardens helped supplement the food supply and also raise spirits. “It is a way for people to claim a victory over something,” Berzok explained.
“During this time, we can feel more about the idea of growing, and moving into the future, and maybe practice a little domestic therapy ourselves,” said Berzok. “And, maybe get a little basil out of it too.”
