Due to overcrowding and people not practicing social distancing, the Skaneateles Town Board has closed the popular Charlie Major Nature Trail to the public until April 21.
The .8 mile nature trail runs along Skaneateles Creek between the Old Seneca Turnpike and Crowhill Road, just north of the village of Skaneateles. In recent months, an unknown individual has “yarn-bombed” several trees to add to the views along the picturesque trail.

“Our Town Board made the decision to close the basketball, tennis and volleyball courts effective Tuesday, April 7th. It follows on our earlier closure of the playgrounds,” said Chris Legg, a board member. “Over the weekend and Monday, the Charlie Major Nature Trail was inundated with visitors overwhelming the parking area and making social distancing untenable.”
Legg said cars were parked along the roads “potentially obstructing emergency vehicles.”
He added that on Tuesday some individuals violated the posted signs and barricades put up by town parks workers at the trail’s two entrances. A variety of Skaneateles group Facebook pages reported violations, including “tearing down signs and the counter actions taken by Mottville residents to enforce the trail closure.”
Legg noted the Conservation Area, Guppy Falls, Mabel Reynolds, Skaneateles Falls, Mandana and Austin parks (excluding playgrounds and playing courts) remain open for individual recreation. He said at this point visitors seem to be properly observing social distancing on the walking paths at Austin Park.
He added that a number of local trails remain open without density problems. They include Bear Swamp, Finger Lakes Trust and CNY land trust lands, Baltimore Woods, state and county parks.
He also commented that "The village has miles of sidewalks.”
