MONTEREY — Dennis the Menace Playground in Monterey, a regional draw for decades, is reopening after being closed for nearly a year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, along with other city services.
The city announced Monday that the playground will reopen April 20 after being closed since April 29, 2020. The reopening is important to the city because the playground draws visitors from all around the Monterey Bay area, who then support local businesses.
The playground will be open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to sunset, and on Mondays from 1 p.m. to sunset. The playground is in the city’s El Estero Park Complex, located at Pearl Street right next to the Frank E. Sollecito Jr. Ballpark and the Monterey Youth Center.
While neighborhood parks reopened March 5, a new order signed Friday by City Manager Hans Uslar expands the reopening of all city playgrounds including Dennis the Menace, picnic tables and barbecue areas, and the public basketball courts.
Dennis the Menace Playground did not initially open along with other playgrounds because state Department of Public Health guidance indicated playgrounds are “designed primarily to serve nearby residents within a half a mile.” Dennis the Menace Playground is considered a regional destination according to a city press release.
“We are thrilled to welcome children back to the playgrounds,” said city Parks and Recreation Director Karen Larson in the press release. “We recommend playing it safe and following all of the posted guidance such as social distancing, wearing a face covering, and washing/sanitizing your hands before and after using the playground.”
In addition to the reopening of the playground, city basketball courts opened Friday and picnic tables, by use permit only, will reopen Thursday. Group barbecue areas will also reopen Thursday, also by permit only.
Reservation information and the permit application are posted on the city website at https://monterey.org/Services/Parks-and-Beaches/Group-BBQ-Reservations, or call the Monterey Recreation Administrative Office at (831) 646-3866. Users are asked to follow current California Department of Public Health guidelines, including wearing masks, washing hands and physical distancing.
The park first opened in 1956 and was the result of creative efforts donated to the city by Hank Ketchum, creator of the Dennis the Menace comic strip. The Monterey Peninsula Jaycees also donated extensive hours of labor toward the development of the children’s playground. Since then, Dennis the Menace Park has undergone several renovations, including Americans with Disabilities Act improvements in 2017.
