The 25 Most Popular Movies On Netflix In 2021 (Update: April 24) - Forbes

This past week, we saw some surprising candidates jump up Netflix’s popularity charts for 2021. Synchronic had a six-day streak atop the Top 10 charts; Why Did You Kill Me? has remained viral since its premiere; and the star-packed Stowaway has predictably spent its first few days dominating Netflix. But have any of these movies made their way into the Top 25 for 2021?

I compile the Top 25 by using a simple formula. Each day, I track where a movie ranks on Netflix’s Top 10 list. And based on that ranking, a movie receives a set number of points. Over the course of 2021, I’ll be logging those points and keeping track of how well each movie performs.

So how is the yearly list shaping up this week? As of April 19, these have been the 25 most popular movies on Netflix in 2021 (the bolded selections are newcomers to this list):

  1. We Can Be Heroes - 353 points
  2. The Secret Life of Pets 2 - 184 points
  3. Yes Day - 176 points
  4. Bigfoot Family - 171 points
  5. I Care a Lot - 169 points
  6. War Dogs - 139 points
  7. Finding ‘Ohana - 138 points
  8. Thunder Force - 137 points
  9. The Vanished - 124 points
  10. The Little Rascals - 119 points
  11. To All the Boys: Always and Forever - 118 points
  12. Homefront - 115
  13. 17 Again - 109 points
  14. Outside the Wire - 109 points
  15. The Dark Knight - 102 points
  16. Deadly Illusions - 97 points
  17. Operation Varsity Blues: The College Admissions Scandal - 93 points

As you can see, there have been no newcomers to the list since last week’s rankings. There are, however, several films that are just on the cusp of making the list.

The most promising new candidate is Synchronic, which has now spent its first eight days on Netflix in either the #1 or #2 position on the daily charts. Synchronic’s total of 78 points ties it for 28th place overall in 2021.

That’s just one position behind Sniper: Ghost Shooter, which managed to net 79 points during its 15-day run, and two positions ahead of Why Did You Kill Me?, which has now netted 76 points. But unlike Synchronic, it’s doubtful that either of those shows will make their way onto the Top 25. Sniper: Ghost Shooter fell off the daily rankings back on April 18, while Why Did You Kill Me? fell all the way down to the #9 position today.

There are a couple of other notable shifts from last week’s rankings to point out. Perhaps the biggest news is that The Secret Life of Pets 2 has now moved past Yes Day to claim the second-place spot. Today marks the animated film’s 58th appearance on the Top 10 charts this year, and its 100th appearance overall. That’s just 11 appearances behind Despicable Me’s record of 111.

The other two biggest jumps belonged to Thunder Force and The Little Rascals. The former, Netflix’s new superhero film, continued to hover near the peak of the daily Top 10 charts this past week. That performance allowed Thunder Force to move from 15th place to eighth place. The Little Rascals also enjoyed a great week, adding 30 points to its yearly total and moving all the way from 20th place to tenth place.

These rankings will continue to be updated weekly, so stay tuned next week to see which movies have moved up and down the list.
