These Are the Most Popular Paint Colors on Instagram for 2021 - Architectural Digest

A year of sheltering in place has unquestionably transformed all of us—and not to mention our homes. Now that decorators and clients alike have had time to attempt the design and renovation projects we’ve dreamt up over the past 12 months, a picture of how the pandemic has shifted our aesthetic priorities has started to emerge. And if Instagram data compiled by DIYS.com is any indication, it would seem that everyone has been feeling a bit blue—at least as far as trending home color palettes are concerned.

Based on hashtag usage, it appears that Farrow & Ball’s Hague Blue is the It shade on Instagram, with the shade of deep blue-green racking up 46,589 hashtags. Hague Blue was far from the only shade of blue to attract attention on the social media platform. The second most popular paint was Stiffkey Blue, another Farrow & Ball offering, which garnered 23,872 hashtags. Hale Navy from Benjamin Moore (11,314 hashtags) and Denim Drift by Dulux (10,322 hashtags) also made their way into the top 10.

Though DIYS.com’s methodology focuses solely on what’s trending with Instagram users, there’s actual data to support what they’re seeing: Farrow & Ball CEO Anthony Davey recently told AD PRO that Hague Blue saw year-on-year sales growth of 250% in 2020, far outpacing the brand’s 35% overall growth in 2020.

The love of blue also tracks with Farrow & Ball’s 2021 trend predictions, released last fall. Its reporting mentions a preference for “clean and timeless blues” like Stiffkey Blue, which “can have a soothing effect in the home despite their cooler undertones.” Whether in well-lit spaces of the home or rooms reliant on artificial light, these sorts of versatile blues can evoke everything from “a more formal and traditional” look to a “richer and more luxurious” feel, depending on the presentation.

Unsurprisingly, Instagram’s favorite paint is displayed in a wide variety of inspiring contexts on the platform, from kitchen islands and bedroom accents to fireplace mantles or wooden furniture. So if you’re still thinking about the ideal shade for a client project, a soothing blue shade sure seems like an easy way to rack up the likes.
