Craving a bourbon-infused Mr. Wiggles or a plate of tender double pork sliders? You’ll want to make it over to Maven soon; the popular craft cocktail bar and restaurant has announced it will close its doors at the end of the month, after 10 years in the Lower Haight.
Run by Jay Bordeleau, a former manager for Beretta, critics and foodies have lauded Maven for its ample bar seating, refined happy hour offerings and stylish yet comforting atmosphere.
Citing the reason for the closure, Bordeleau said he was “unable to find a reasonable path forward” with his landlord, a fate that has befallen countless restaurants across San Francisco as they struggled to work out reduced-rent agreements during the pandemic and subsequent economic shutdown.
“‘Such a total bummer’ is beyond an understatement,’” Bordeleau wrote in an e-mail to SFGATE.
“Maven’s love affair with the Lower Haight started even before we opened when neighbors crashed our investor preview night and instantly made it a better party,” he wrote. “Since then, Maven has welcomed young dates and old friends alike; gossip sessions and meaningful heart to hearts. First dates turned into our regulars; even hosted a few weddings, and then met their kids.”
The hardest part of losing the restaurant, Bordeleau said, was having no choice but to lay off his five remaining staff members. The pandemic had already forced him to furlough 10 others last year.
“I’m mad,” he said. “I fought as hard as I could for their jobs and it still wasn’t enough.”
Maven’s last day in business will be Monday, Mar. 29. In the meantime, the restaurant is available for takeout or delivery through DoorDash. It’s also open for outdoor dining with reservations available through OpenTable.
“Maven will continue in the hearts of staff and in the memory of our beloved neighborhood,” said Bordeleau. “Thank you to Lower Haight for being the best damn neighborhood. We got another a few weeks of hustle in us. Let’s have a good time and sabre some champagne.”
