Wilmington family wins ABC’s ‘The Great Christmas Light Fight,’ town becomes popular destination this holiday season - Boston Herald

A Massachusetts family with a “mind-blowing” Christmas light display — that astronauts might be able to see from outer space — has won a national competition, and attracted thousands to see their one-of-a-kind electrifying exhibit.

The Fiore family in Wilmington recently won ABC’s “The Great Christmas Light Fight” for its sparkling holiday display, beating out other extreme holiday displays in Utah, Missouri and New York.

The Fiore family took home the $50,000 top prize, along with the coveted Light Fight trophy.

“This is definitely, probably one of the best moments of my life,” Charles “Chas” Fiore, 23, the brainchild behind the Wilmington light display, said on the ABC show. “We came out on top, and it’s a great feeling.”

Taking Christmas decorating to another level, the Fiore family’s home is completely lit up in green and red — with lights covering every part of the house.

“It was a lot to cover, but it had to be done,” Chas said. “Had to cover everything.”

“There are never enough lights,” he added. “We need to be seen from space actually. That’s probably the five-year plan at this point.”

The display has a village theme. Leading up to the house, there are eight facades of buildings with clock towers, balconies, and doors. Each 22-foot tall building has a theme, such as a candy shop for one of them.

“This is not a house. This is an entire town,” said show judge Taniya Nayak. “I’ve never seen anything like this… I feel like I’m at a theme park right now.”

“This is just mind blowing,” she later added.

Every single lightbulb in the display has to be spaced 2 and 1/2 inches apart, said Chas, who is called a “total perfectionist.”

“So everything is uniformly covered,” he said of the spacing.

Wilmington has been flooded with visitors lately after the Fiore family was featured on ABC and came in first place.

Concord Street has been at a standstill, as cars exit I-93 to check out the display. Motorists have sat in traffic for nearly two hours to get a two-minute peek at the lit-up house and building facades.

“There is extremely heavy traffic on Concord Street due to the Christmas lights display,” Wilmington Police tweeted last week. “We recommend motorists avoid the area. If you want to view the lights we suggest waiting until later in the evening or viewing them on another night.”

Chas said his parents always did their best to give the family a good Christmas, so now he’s trying to do that for other families.

He said, “Just seeing the families being happy and just out here laughing, it’s better than anything you could ever wish for to know that people are going home happy and with smiles on their faces.”
