CLEVELAND, Ohio - A spectacular photo of a Lake Erie sunset was the most popular post on cleveland.com’s Facebook page in 2020.
The stunning picture, captured from the Lake Erie Bluffs by local photographer Igor Oliyarnik, had the most interest and chatter of any cleveland.com Facebook post this year. The Sept. 15 photo raked in more than 70,000 likes, 1,500 comments and 10,000 shares.

Data is based on most likes, comments and shares from a CrowdTangle search as of Dec. 15. Some posts have been filtered out based on repetition of content topic.
No. 2: A colorful photo shared on Aug. 12 and captured in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park by Greg Sandera was also wildly popular on Facebook. The image received more than 42,000 likes, 660 comments and 7,700 shares.
No. 3: The Cuyahoga Valley National Park was a hot spot for popular photos this year, with an image of vibrant fall foliage and a train also getting thousands of likes, comments and shares. The photo, which had nearly 30,000 likes, was taken by Denny Petkovsek.
No. 4: A powerful photo by cleveland.com’s John Kuntz of Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals players standing together and linking arms before their game during the national anthem earned more than 21,000 likes. The Sept. 17 moment was meant to show unity and raise awareness for racial injustice.
No. 5: A March 15 post announcing Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine’s decision to temporarily close bars and restaurants to help prevent spreading the coronavirus was one of our most shared posts of the year, with more than 23,000 shares. The post was also a big talker, with more than 2,700 comments.
No. 6: A Nov. 25 Facebook poll asking readers if former Browns player Clay Matthews should be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame earned nearly 14,000 votes. Hundreds of people also commented on the post.
No. 7: Another poll, this one asking if presidential candidates should have their microphones muted during debates, was a huger talker. The Sept. 30 post, shared one day after the chaotic Cleveland showdown between President Donald Trump and Joe Biden, garnered more than 12,000 reactions and thousands of comments.
No. 8: A March 12 post about Cavaliers star Kevin Love donating $100,000 to Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse employees who were out of work due to the pandemic was shared by thousands of people. The heartwarming post attracted nearly 11,000 likes, 700 comments and more than 5,300 shares.
No. 9: Followers of cleveland.com’s Facebook page enjoy having a say on topics with thousands of them weighing in on a variety of polls, including weekly ones asking people to grade Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield’s performance. A Sept. 27 poll, following the Browns’ win against Washington, raked in 11,000 likes and nearly 1,000 comments.
No. 10: The Browns are having an excellent year, so we weren’t surprised to see a few posts of players make the Top 10. An Oct. 11 post, following the Browns’ win over the Colts, had more than 5,000 shares. The post, celebrating the Browns’ record being 4-1 for the first time since 1994, also had nearly 8,000 likes and hundreds of comments.
No. 11: A July 23 poll asking readers if DeWine made the right decision by issuing a statewide mask mandate sparked a lot of interest. The poll earned more than 10,000 votes and 2,500 comments.
No. 12: Another poll, this one asking if DeWine or Trump had the better response to the coronavirus pandemic, also saw thousands of people weighing in. More than 1,200 people also shared their thoughts in the comments.
No. 13: A Feb. 1 video of former Indians player Carlos Santana signing autographs for young fans at Tribe Fest raked in more than 10,000 likes. Watch how special Santana made this youngster feel.
No. 14: Prior to DeWine issuing the statewide mask order, a June 26 post asking if Ohioans should be required to wear masks was a big talker with more than 1,300 comments and 8,700 votes.
No. 15: A May 21 post announcing Lucky’s Café in Tremont would be featured on Food Network show “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives,” had more than 4,000 shares. The post also earned 6,400 likes and hundreds of comments.
No. 16: An Aug. 7 photo, on National Lighthouse Day, was so beautiful it attracted more than 8,500 likes and 1,300 shares. The sunset photo was captured from Wendy Park by photographer Igor Oliyarnik.
No. 17: On April 20, DeWine closed all K-12 school buildings for the remainder of the school year, requiring students to learn remotely. A poll asking readers if the governor made the right call had more than 9,000 votes and hundreds of comments.
No. 18: A Dec. 6 post celebrating the Browns’ 9-3 record at the time and first-year coach Kevin Stefanski’s performance raked in the likes, earning nearly 9,000.
No. 19: A Dec. 5 post celebrating Ohio State football coach Larry Johnson’s first win while he was filling in for head coach Ryan Day, who was out with the coronavirus, received more than 8,000 likes.
No. 20: A June 4 article on the Ohio House approving legislation that would allow Ohioans to possess and set off consumer-grade fireworks generated a ton of interest with more than 10,000 people sharing the post.
