Rizk family sells Seven Hills’ popular George’s Deli known for iconic ‘Dairy Deli’ sign - cleveland.com

SEVEN HILLS, Ohio -- After nearly three decades of owning the popular George’s Deli with its iconic “Dairy Deli” sign at the corner of Ridgewood Drive and Crossview Road, the Rizk family earlier this week sold the family business.

“After close to 30 years, we decided to sell to another family,” said Independence resident Fady Rizk, who in 2016 bought the business from his parents, Joe and Susie. “My parents are old enough they can retire. I have a family of my own that needs some attention. And owning a family business like this, you don’t have time.”

A small-town store from a bygone era, George’s Deli provided the area with quality food, quality service and friendly faces.

“I thank the Rizk Family for their years of service to our community,” Seven Hill Mayor Anthony D. Biasiotta said.

“Their deli not only provided needed amenities to the area, but it provided a gathering spot for residents to exchange pleasantries with the cordial family. I wish them well in their future endeavors.”

The store truly broadened residents’ palates with its signature homemade Mediterranean menu -- hummus, tabouli, sausage, spinach pies and fresh-baked baklava.

“My dad got an opportunity and bought the business on a handshake deal with the property owner,” said Rizk, who started working at George’s Deli at the age of 16. “Slowly but surely as time went on, my dad and mom started to integrate Middle Eastern food into our customer’s diet.

“First it was hummus and then tabouli and slowly it was other dishes. Customers took a liking to it, coming here for a lot of their Mediterranean diet needs.”

What folks may miss the most is Joe’s famous hot dog stand, which also offered Italian sausage during the summer.

“On the weekends, Fridays and Saturdays, you could catch my dad outside grilling,” Rizk said. “It’s kind of like a staple in the community. Everybody knows summer is here when people see my dad out there.”

George’s Deli was also known for its corned beef sandwiches with customers lining up each St. Patrick’s Day. Rizk said the new owners are planning to continue to offer the majority of the menu items.

While selling the family business is bittersweet, Rizk said the time was right.

“I just hope residents remember we were good people,” said Rizk, who works as a full-time food distributor. “We were kind and a part of the fabric of making the city a little bit better every day and every week.”
