Syracuse’s popular Downtown Living Tour postponed because of coronavirus outbreak - syracuse.com

Syracuse, N.Y. -- Downtown Living Tour, the apartments showcase that draws 2,000 people to downtown Syracuse every spring, will be postponed until September because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The popular event was scheduled for May 16. But with the coronavirus outbreak still spreading, the Downtown Committee of Syracuse, which organizes the showcase, has decided to put it off, said Merike Treier, the organization’s executive director.

No date has been chosen yet, she said.

“We’re looking at a couple of dates in September,” she said. “We’re hoping by then things may be back to an opportunity for us to host a tour.”

The tour gives participants a chance to see inside eight-to-12 downtown apartment projects, many of the upscale variety and some in historic buildings recently transformed into residential developments.

“The main reason we do it is to build awareness of the very special development taking place throughout the district,” said Treier. “It’s been very successful at building awareness and getting people to understand the level of development that’s happening and what downtown living looks like.”

State and local government leaders have issued orders prohibiting large public gatherings and encouraging people to practice social distancing to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus and COVID-19, the respiratory illness that has killed 4,758 people in New York, including five in Onondaga County.

Downtown Syracuse has seen a major resurgence in recent years, with the upper floors of many vacant or underutilized buildings redeveloped into luxury apartments. Downtown is home to 4,005 residents, a 70% increase in downtown’s population since 2009, according to the Downtown Committee.

Construction on several downtown apartment projects has stopped temporarily under Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s recent order halting all non-essential construction during the pandemic. One of them was the 212-unit project at the former Nynex building at 300 E. Washington St., which was expected to be the headquarters of this year’s Downtown Living Tour.
