N.J.’s most popular coronavirus takeout order isn’t very Jersey - NJ.com

As the coronavirus pandemic has sequestered us in our homes for weeks on end, we’ve all earned some comfort food. And let’s be honest, much of New Jersey’s best cuisine falls into that category.

But according to Uber Eats, the most popular takeout order in New Jersey during the COVID-19 crisis isn’t a classic Garden State dish.

Not pizza, not pork roll, not even a Wawa hoagie.

It’s chicken sandwiches.

I’m not clucking around. The popular food delivery service released the most commonly ordered foods in 35 states. New Jersey residents are apparently using chicken to cope with COVID.

Look, I’m not here to judge. Everyone deals with crisis differently. And I know as well as anyone in New Jersey how good chicken sandwiches are — when Popeyes’s version of the sandwich took the internet by storm last summer, I braved the line at the Menlo Park Mall foodcourt to try it. And it’s great! Still not as good as Chick-fil-A, but maybe that’s where you’re ordering from. Uber Eats didn’t specify.

You may be stuck in your homes, but your homes are still in a state with the best damn pizza, bagels and Italian food in the United States (hush, New York).

We’ve never needed an excuse to get these Garden State delicacies delivered to our door, but now you have one! It’s more important than ever, actually. The restaurant industry is hurting in an unprecedented way, with coronavirus forcing eateries to rely exclusively on takeout and delivery. Popeyes and Chick-fil-A are massive chains that will feel the corona-induced economic crunch less than mom and pop restaurants in New Jersey. Luckily, pizza and bagels travel exceptionally well. Some pasta is delivered better than others, I’ll give you that, but takeout New Jersey Italian is better than most of the country’s sit-down Italian.

In all fairness, most pizzerias already have in-house delivery and don’t need Uber Eats. It’s almost always better to go directly to the source and just call the restaurant — they get more money that way, and there is typically less confusion. And Uber Eats is one of the most popular delivery apps (the best, in my experience), but it’s certainly not the only one.

So eat what you gotta eat to get through this crazy time. But don’t forget where you are while you do it. And maybe once a while, leave the chicken sandwich and take the cannoli.
