Reem’s Arab bakery officially departed its original location in Fruitvale on August 31, and followed up with an Instagram goodbye to the plaza near BART, thanking the neighborhood for five years. Owner Reem Assil closed the Fruitvale location at the beginning of the pandemic; she’s now moving into a new production bakery in the Restore Oakland building, to sell more wholesale to grocers like Berkeley Bowl and Good Eggs, and the Mission storefront location is still open.
Reem’s also announced that they’re handing the keys over to Crystal Wahpepah, “an indigenous cook, activist, and educator,” as Reem’s introduced on Instagram. The SF Chronicle reports that Wahpepah is a popular caterer in Oakland, has appeared on Food Network’s Chopped, and as a member of the Kickapoo tribe of Oklahoma, she’s known for bison meatballs and blue corn cakes. Stay tuned for more details. [SF Chronicle]

- Dandelion Chocolate workers voted in favor of unionizing by a slim margin of 20 in favor to 19 against, the SF Chronicle reports. It’s been a long road to unionization, starting with racism allegations in 2020, a unionization effort that kicked off in March 2021, followed by layoffs in June 2021, which the company claims were not anti-union. The Chron reports that six union supporters were laid off, and two more left the company of their own volition, which may make organizing and bargaining a challenge. [SF Chronicle]
- Square Pie Guys are rounding up what they call a “Pepperoni Posse,” pulling together more than a dozen local pizzerias, to throw a one-day fundraiser. On Monday, September 20, Square Pie Guys says if you order their most popular pepperoni pizza, 10 percent of proceeds will go to Food Shift, an organization that fights food insecurity in the Bay Area. SSP Beer Hall, Cellarmaker, Fiorella, Pizzeria Delfina, DamnFine, and other popular pizzerias are joining them and running similar specials that day. So if you need an excuse to not cook dinner and pepperoni party on a Monday night, hey, at least you’re doing it for a good cause.
