More than 3 million newborn lounger pillows made by Boppy are being recalled after eight infants reportedly suffocated to death between 2015 and 2020, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CSPC) announced Thursday.
The Boppy Company is recalling the following products, according to the CSPC:
- Boppy Original Newborn Loungers
- Boppy Preferred Newborn Loungers
- Pottery Barn Kids Boppy Newborn Loungers
The recalled products have been sold at Walmart, Pottery Barn, Target, and Amazon since 2004, according to the CSPC. The loungers were sold in a “variety of colors and fashions” and ranged from $30-$44.
The agency said the eight different deaths reportedly took place after infants were placed on their side, stomach or back and fell asleep on the lounger. The babies reportedly suffocated and were found unresponsive on their stomach or side, according to the CSPC.
The CSPC urged families to stop using the recalled products and to contact The Boppy Company for a refund or credit. You can call 800-416-1355 or visit Boppy’s website, which redirects you to their recall and safety alert page.
“Loungers and pillow-like products are not safe for infant sleep, due to the risk of suffocation,” acting chairman Robert S. Adler, CPSC commissioner, said in a statement. “Since we know that infants sleep so much of the time - even in products not intended for sleep — and since suffocation can happen so quickly, these Boppy lounger products are simply too risky to remain on the market.”
The Boppy Company also issued its own statement following the recall.
“We are devastated to hear of these tragedies,” a spokesperson for Boppy said. “Boppy is committed to doing everything possible to safeguard babies, including communicating the safe use of our products to parents and caregivers, and educating the public about the importance of following all warnings and instructions and the risks associated with unsafe sleep practices for infants. The lounger was not marketed as an infant sleep product and includes warnings against unsupervised use.”
