One of San Jose’s most popular attractions in recent years was “Sonic Runway,” the art installation where visitors could walk through a path of 25 sound-activated, illuminated arches in front of San Jose City Hall. Well, get your strutting shoes out of the closet because it’s coming back in November — and this time it’s staying for six years.
“Sonic Runway,” created by a team led by artists Rob Jensen and Warren Trezevant and designer Stockhausen, made its San Jose debut in late 2017 — the first installation of the city’s Playa to the Paseo initiative, a partnership with the Burning Man Foundation to showcase art created for the iconic desert festival. With light patterns pulsing through its 432-foot length along Santa Clara Street, the installation was the backdrop for concerts, fashion shows and a hard drive’s worth of selfies as visitors flocked to City Hall at night.
Its stay was extended a bit, but it was removed the following March with the vague possibility it could return one day.
Well, that day is Nov. 5, when a free opening reception is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., featuring a performance by San Jose Brazilian percussion and dance group Bloco do Sol, DJ music and food trucks. And don’t worry if you miss opening night, as the installation will be here through 2027.
Plans had been in the works to bring the interactive artwork back to San Jose for a multiyear stay in early 2020, but that idea was shelved when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Kerry Adams Hapner, San Jose’s director of cultural affairs, told me the installation was ready to go but the city didn’t want to create an atmosphere where large numbers of people might gather — even outdoors — until the COVID situation improved.
Adams-Hapner says fans can expect a different experience from the first time around, too. “The Sonic Runway artists have been working hard to create a new version of the iconic art installation that sets a new bar in terms of a quality visual and sonic experience,” she said
ARTISTIC CELEBRATION: The inaugural Mosaic Festival Silicon Valley is set to take off Saturday at the Mexican Heritage Plaza in San Jose, with six hours of art, performances and workshops — along with food and music, of course.
Mosaic America teamed up with the School of Arts and Culture to produce the festival, which seemingly has something for everyone from Dunsmuir Scottish Dancers, Opera San Jose and New Ballet to Ensamble Folclórico Colibrí, Tabia African American Theatre Ensemble and the Blood Moon Orchestra.
“Our goal was to make sure that every person who comes to the festival sees their culture and community represented, seeding a sense of belonging,” says Priya Das, co-founder and vice president of Progamming for Mosaic America.
The free festival runs from noon to 6 p.m. at the plaza, 1700 Alum Rock Ave. You can check out all the offerings and register to attend at www.mosaicamerica.org/festival.
RUNNING AROUND: The Rock N Roll Running Series will be back in San Jose this weekend with a 5K run and kids’ run on Saturday and the 10K run and half-marathon on Sunday. A race expo will take place at downtown’s Discovery Meadow Park both days.
First off, that means downtown will be filled with music as Super Soul Bros. plays the tunes at the finish line festival at Plaza de Cesar Chavez, and the band Math Class provides entertainment at the expo. Nearly a dozen performers and DJs will be supplying the soundtrack along the route, too. That also means lots of downtown streets will be closed — partially or entirely — both mornings and throughout the day in some areas. Whether you’re running or not, you can get all the details at www.runrockroll.com/san-jose and click on “travel” for the chart of road closures.
